Quite interesting and eye opening question I'd say. If you don't know and wondering what this is all about, this is about over working. Or working too intense without any human interaction. Remember that guy / girl who badly talks to people in class? Or that person who always looks like he's very in approachable to people by the work driven busy body language he shows? This article is all about that.
So one may argue that, "Yes that's what a workplace is meant for. "Nobody pays me to talk around and waste my time, they pay me for work " which is arguably true. But is it what a job / college is all about? Or is it life all about the money making? No.right?
It is about enjoying what we do. In order to enjoy something to the fullest, the basic needs of a human being needs to be met. If you follow along with my blog, i recently wrote an article titled "How to use social media helps to stay productive" which talks on the same concept I'm going to emphasis on now.
It is the Maslow's hierarchy of needs which talks about needs of a human being to stay motivated in his paper "A Theory of Human motivation" . The needs of a human being starts from physiological needs such as food, air and water to the need of Self actualization.
There is a need for every human being to feel loved and accepted in the environment in which he or she works. This is called the need for a human being to feel the sense of love and belonging. When a human being does not interact with his/her fellow peers, he / she is more likely to be avoided also. This makes them feel more stressed at work and they wouldn't enjoy the work they do, even though they might be doing great at finishing tasks.
However, this article does not encourage anyone to waste their time in useless conversations often which would disturb / distract themselves and others at work. This is more of the essential ice breaking that needs to be done every other working day.
One of the methods that is suggested by Amy Woods, the Author of the Book Content 10 X where she talks about maximizing efficiency at work is to invest 5 minutes of everyone's time to settle down together for a talk before everyone starts to get into their work.
This improves the quality of work drastically as they had their psychological need satisfied.
Apart from this, there always will be a situation where you need to work with people in the same project to achieve a common goal. People who are a human "being" are more probable to be voted for a leadership based position than the ones who are human "doing".
But I wouldn't recommend interactions based on this being the very intention as that would be artificial. Having proper communication increases the overall efficiency of the work and helps solve the feeling of time dilation and building up connections is very important when it comes to any common space.
Always remember this, we as human beings are interdependent on each other in a psychological level. One human "doing" in an environment can really disrupt the efficiency of the human "beings" around.
