This article explains about how theaters use small unnoticed techniques to give you that "want to see it in a theater first" experience again & again. This is also the reason why good movies are delivered well feel worth it and movies that are not up to the mark feel like a huge waste of time and money.
My first movie watching experience.
For the first time I went to a movie, I was having early stages of myopia. So after watching the movie for around 2.5 hours and when the lights were turned on,I felt a lot uncomfortable and asked my friend,"Why turn OFF the screen in the first place when you have a big screen?".he was like"Dude,That's How movies are meant to be enjoyed" and I didn't find a clear answer there.
And this kinda was there is my thoughts as I grew up and I eventually forgot about it.Now that I've started studying a lot from the gold mine of information from the internet,I feel it's more of the attention management tactic followed in theaters for the 2 to 3 hours we spend there to give that experience.
What is Attention Management?
Attention management in simple words can be put into as the efficient use of time which we allocate for certain tasks.Setting aside time for tasks is time management but attention management is the effective use of the scheduled time.
The Psychology of it.
1)Big stuff capture the most attention.
This may not be much related to the heading you saw now,but has a vital role in the experience. We have always been awe struck by things that are huge as they take up the majority of the information the eyes can see.
2)Eliminating ear's distractions.
Anything other than what you want for that point of time is a distraction. That is why theaters are sound proof on the inside and before any movie you are requested to put your phone in silent mode.
3)Optimizing the information the eye receives.
The big screen gets the attention part well but to manage the attention, you have to eliminate distractions as much as possible. That is why when you switch OFF the lights around you aren't able to see anything except the movie giving you that movie watching experience.
